Alignment to Standards

How Kids Voting Lessons Align with the Hawaii State Standards:

The State of Hawaii is adopting National Standards.  The alignment charts below are based on the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards III (HCPSIII) and will be revised in the future.

  1. In grades K-11, lessons have been aligned with the Social Studies content area, Political Science/Civics strand.
  2. In grade 12, since Social Studies is an elective course for seniors, the Kids Voting USA curriculum activities have been aligned to Language Arts standards.

Kids Voting USA Classroom Activities for each grade level are listed by theme, concepts, and lesson titles. These are suggested lessons for the teacher to use and are not necessarily listed in sequential order.

Kids Voting USA Classroom Activities should be adapted, as needed, to meet classroom needs while addressing the Hawaii State Standards, Benchmarks, and Sample Performance Assessments.

A Literature Connection Activity and a Culminating Activity are included at the end of each theme in the Kids Voting USA Classroom Activities and are highly recommended for use.

The Hawaii State Department of Education uses data from Kids Voting Hawaii elections as one of the indicators to measure and track its efforts to promote civic responsibility. The results of the past participation by students in DOE schools is included in the Department’s Trend Report:  Educational and Fiscal Accountability State Summary posted on the Department’s website. Data for individual schools can be accessed via the Find My School page on the DOE website.  Find your school’s page and check the Trend Report, Educational and Fiscal Accountability for Civic Responsibility data.  The DOE will again use the data to measure its efforts to promote civic responsibility.  Kids Voting Hawaii activities may also be listed in the school’s report on Civic Responsibility activities.
